IMIA - International Medical Interpreters Association http://www.imiaweb.org  IMIA is an organization dedicated to the professional development of medical interpreters and serves to educate healthcare providers, administrators and the public on professional language access services in the US and globally. 
NCIHC - National Council on Interpreting in Healthcare  http://www.mitaonline.org A multidisciplinary organization whose mission is to promote culturally competent professional health care interpreting as a means to support equal access to health services for individuals with limited English proficiency.
Midwest International Trade Association  http://www.mitaonline.org A non-profit organization that encourages the expansion of trade between the Midwest and foreign markets by sponsoring meetings and networking events, international trade conferences and educational seminars.
NAJIT - National Association of Judiciary Interpreters and Translators  www.najit.org A professional development association for court interpreters and translators. ATA - American Translators Association www.atanet.org  ATA was established to advance the translation and interpreting professions and foster the professional development of its members.

Certification Information

Certification: Certification for translators and interpreters means that a person has met certain minimum standards as set by the certifying organization. It is awarded to an individual by the certifying organization. Usually the certification process will have specific prerequisites for candidates and once those are meet, the person will take an exam. If the candidate passes the exam, certification is awarded. Continuing education units may be required for maintaining the certification and some certifying organizations require continued membership in the organization for the certification to remain valid.Certificate: Awarded to an individual for attending an event and/or successfully completing a course of study that may be for any number of hours or days of study.

Volunteer Opportunities

Nebraska Senior Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP)

Nebraska Senior Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) helps seniors and the disabled navigate their Medicare Health care coverage. SHIIP is seeking volunteers - especially bilingual SP/E speakers - to help provide free, in-depth Medicare training in exchange for twelve counseling sessions per year. Lancaster & Saunders Counties Community Action

Community Action is seeking volunteer tax preparers to assist in the Tax Preparation Program, a program that provides free tax preparation & filing services to qualifying individuals.
