Voices and Visions
Celebrating a World of Difference
Through Language and Art

To commemorate our 10th anniversary, NATI published a magazine for the 10th Annual Regional Conference. The spectacular cover art was created by local graphic artist, Theresa Sosa. The articles were contributed by Holly Mikkelson, Marjory Bancroft, Jerome Kills Small, Marsha Conroy, Ricky Wray, Janet Bonet and Fermin Garcia. Please follow this link Voices and Visions Pub_lores.pdf to the full publication.

NATI truly appreicates the contributions of those who took the time to write an article for the magazine. Jerome Kills Small's article in the magazine helps to tie together the drum theme and our profession of translation and interpretation by speaking to the levels of communication represented by the drum beat and languages. Holly Mikkelson tells us about the Alaskan developments in professionalization. Marjory Bancroft highlights an interesting perspective on community interpreting. Marsha Conroy, as NATI's outreach coodinator to speakers of languages other than Spanish, writes about the importance of LOTS to the growth of our organization and profession. Ricky Wray, tells us about the employment oppotunities in corrections and law enforcement and the importance of that branch of interpreter services. Janet Bonet takes a personal experience and relates it to her professional life as she discusses the specialty area of interpreting for the elderly LEP population. And finally, Fermin Garcia, gives a Spanish article that takes us into the higher registers of our profession by challenging us to think about symbols and language.

The special "For the Good of the Profession" awards were presented for the first time at the 10th Annual Regional Conference. Details on the four categories and awardees can be found in the magazine. You will also find a call for participants on the State Advisory Committee from Farella E. Robinson, the Regional Director of the US. Commission on Civil Rights.

The magazine includes contact and biographical information about our featured performers all of whom helped to bring "The Language of the Drum" to our event. NATI appreciates the valuable assistance of Cheryl Stover and Theresa Sosa in finding and coordinating this element of our "Culture and Communtiny Fest" C&C fest 2009 8 x 11 poster with info page.pdf. Thanks to our sponosors, booth space users and advertisers, NATI was able to include the magazine in the registrants' conference packets and once again make available our conference scholarship program. Links to our national, local and keynote speakers, sponsors and advertisers are posted on the "LINKS" page of the NATI website as are the presenters' bios and session briefs so you can see what great trainings and challenging issues NATI brings to Nebraska each year. Building a resource base of experts in translation and interpretation as well as in related professions such as medicine, law and language arts is a major part of NATI's mission. Our conference trainers and presenters are superb resources. Please follow this link to their bios  nati 2009 Presenter's Information for handout.doc and session briefs.

There are many fun photos of our conference on the 2009 Conference Review and Photos page. If you took photos at the conference and would like to share them, please send them to jbonet@cox.net in jpeg format and they will be added to the collage collection. We hope you enjoy the magazine and that it demonstrates just why NATI is so proud to offer such outstanding learning opportunites to our colleagues. We hope you make the choice to join or renew your membership so NATI can continue to offer these opportunities for professional development and networking.

Sincerely, Janet Bonet, Conference Coordinator
